Today’s edition of the Nigerian Army Resource Centre (NARC) Weekly Subject Experts Presentations was held at Hall C, TY Buratai Block at the Centre in Abuja. They made presentations in their various areas of coverage, namely; the Indian Sub-Continent, Central America and North America.
The First presentation of the day was made by Brigadier General OD Donibo, Subject Expert for the Indian Sub-Continent. His presentation discussed the Blackouts and soaring prices in Pakistani economy on the brink. The Blackout has heightened anxiety among the populace and causes a serious economic meltdown in the country, the nationwide power outrage last month brought Pakistan to standstill, General Donibo in his analysis and lessons for Nigeria noted that Nigeria’s national electricity has collapsed more than 200 times in the last 8 years resulting into widespread blackout which has a negative effect on the Nigerians economic. He suggested that for Nigeria to overcome its power challenges, the federal government should encourage the private sector to invest maximally in green and renewable energy to increase the national energy mix.
The Second presentation was made by Brigadier General AA Adanogu, Subject Expert for the North America. Brigadier General AA Adanogu’s presentation focused on US supreme court grant writ of certiorari to North Carolina supreme Court in the Moore vs harper case on independent state Legislative doctrine. The Moore vs Harper is an ongoing US supreme court case arising from the redistricting plan of North Carolina. The Moore Harper case has been discribed as one of the most high profile case in the US supreme court. Dissecting on the issue, General Adanogu relate the the controversial judgment delivered on the APC Yobe North Senatorial tickets between Senator Ahmed Lawan vs Bashir Machina which the judgement itself generated alot of controversies. He noted that the judgment has made a mockery of internal party democracy which Nigerian courts have historically sought to protect under fundamental right principles.
The Last presentation was made by Major General AB Adamu, Subject Expert on the Central American Region. The senior officer’s presentation discussed El Salvador and Cuba among the countries with the most prisoners in the world. These was as a result of raids on tens of thousand of suspected gang members that led to overcrowding in prinsons which have a great significant impact on its national security. Like Cuba and El Salvador, prison overcrowding in Nigeria is not a new thing. Terrorism, banditry kidnapping, and other related offences makes Nigeria’s case different. He however noted that correctional centres plays an important role in maintaining national security by incapacitating individuals who pose a threat to society
Present at the briefing were the Director of Research, Prof CBN Ogbogbo, Senior Research Fellows, Directors, Research Fellows, Consultants, senior officers both serving and retired, and other staff of the Centre.
