The NARC’s Weekly Subject Experts Presentations took place on Wednesday 12 July 2023 at NARC board room, TY Buratai Block. However there was no presentation made, selected topic on private armies issue were discussed by many subjects expert and senior research fellows.
The discussion dwelt on the state of private armies in Nigeria and its implications on the security apparatus in Nigeria.
Issues of non State actors carrying arms against the state thereby causing havoc to the citizen without proper sanctions from the state.
The discussants highlighted the economic and security problems posed by some private armies in some countries, particularly the issue of RSF in Sudan and WAGNER operating in many countries were extensively analysed. Senior Officers at the presentation pointed out some factors contributing to the emergence of private armies in Nigeria as well as way forward. It was recommended that Ministry of defence and Federal Government of Nigeria should curb the emergence of such armies and checkmate their activities in Nigeria. The nation’s security problems viz tackling issues of porous border, using technology to enhance border security and proliferation of small arms,, improvement of the synergy between the security agencies and proper monitoring of our neighbouring countries especially francophone countries in order to checkmate the activities of WAGNER group.
Also issues relating to IPOB, ESN and Unknown gunmen sect in the East, Sunday Igboho in the West, Asari Dakubo and Tompolo in the Niger Delta as well as civilian JTF and Yan sa kai in the North were deliberated and proper coordination by the NSA must be adopted in addressing security issues in all ramifications in Nigeria.
