The NARC’s Weekly Subject Experts Presentations on Friday 7 July 2023 was held at Hall C, TY Buratai Block. There was only one presentation made by Brig Gen SN Eze the Subject Expert for South East Asia.
The presentation dwelt on the recent incidents of boat mishaps in the Philippines. The presenter discussed the incident of the Philippines’ fishing boat that capsized 337km east of the southern island of Mindanao which led to the death of 2 Filipino fishermen and 7 others missing. He highlighted the ‘Genesis 2’ boat mishap and rescue of 14 of its 23 crew members by other fishing vessels and noted that the Philippines Government launched an immediate investigation into the cause of the accident.
The Subject Expert cited cases of boat mishaps in Nigeria and drew attention to the economic and security implications of such incidences. He suggested appropriate measures by which the National Inland Waterways Authority and the Federal Government could mitigate the problems of boat mishap in Nigeria and thereby improve the security and economic situation of the maritime sector.
