Today’s edition of the Nigerian Army Resource Centre (NARC) Weekly Subject Experts’ Presentation was held at Hall C, TY Buratai Block, Abuja. There was one presentation made by the Subject Experts on Eastern Europe.
The only presentation of the day was made by Brig Gen AK Egwuagu subject experts on Eastern Europe. His presentation highlighted the Russia and Press freedom Declares Independent TV Channel “Undesirable” and Bans it. Over the last decade, press freedom has faced significant Challenges and restrictions in Russia. The country has a long history of controlling the media and the government’s grip has tightened further. Due to what took place in 2014, the Russian government pass a law that allowed it to criticized media organizations as’’ Foreign Agents’’, in continuation of the country cracks down news media and groups are regarded as threat to National Security.
In his analysis and lessons for Nigeria, Brig Gen AK Egwuagu (Rtd) noted that, The government is needed to ensure security control of the people, justice and equity for the citizens, safe guide the rights and freedom of the people, safe guide the territorial integrity, political stability and peace as well as improving the economic and social development of the nation. Press censorship was imposed by the Nigerian government from 1859-1960 to help in controlling the Nigerian press that were mainly privately owned. Despite this constitutional protection, it is widely believed that Nigerian censors is solely targeting on certain types of ideas, such as Political opposition and immorality.
He recommended that Nigeria should encourage freedom of expression and never to depend on independent TV, Radio stations and newspaper houses. He also added that, there is need to set up investigating task forces in order to effectively fight the corruption cases against government officials. He also advised that Nigeria should carry out prompt prosecution of government officials charged for corruption and stiff penalties awarded to those found guilty.
