The Director General Nigerian Army Resource Center Major General Garba Wahab (Rtd) has reiterated the importance of running indigenous language proficiency course in the center as among the tools that assist troops in managing crisis during internal security operations. He made the statement during inauguration ceremony of participants of the twelfth indigenous language proficiency course at Nigerian Army Resource Center Abuja.
He said understanding languages other than mother tongue would assist troops deployed on operations in virtually all the states in the country. Gen Wahab commanded the Army authority for sustaining the course, which he said has contributed in enhancing leadership capacity among Nigerian Army personnel.
During his inaugural address, the chief of Administration Nigerian Army Maj Gen OW Ali stated that the establishment of new formations and units across the country where most of the residents speak only their indigenous languages, requires that all Nigerian Army officers and soldiers have the basic knowledge of the three major languages that are widely spoken within the Nigerian operational environment.
He further added that the initiative will among others promote esprit-de-corps among personnel and also afford troops the ability to effectively communicate with the locals and most importantly assist in gathering intelligence which is necessary in the execution of assigned tasks.
