Today’s edition of the Nigerian Army Resource Centre (NARC) Weekly Subject Experts’ Presentation was held at Hall C, TY Buratai Block, NARC, Abuja.
The only presentation of the day was made by Major General KO Ogundele (Rtd) Subject Expert for China. This presentation discussed the recent death sentence handed to the former Chinese Finance Minister, Fu Zhenghua over the misappropriation of approximately $16.5 million. Major General KO Ogundele noted the Chinese policy on corruption and how this has helped them reduce the incidences of public corruption and theft of public funds. He also noted the efficiency of the Chinese judiciary and it’s justice system in prosecuting and convicting such a high profile individual. The Chinese actions were contrasted with Nigeria and the continued entrenchment of corruption and theft of public funds and public amenities. The inability of the Nigerian justice system and the judiciary to bring to justice and ensure proper prosecution of these criminals was the focus of discussions. It was noted that the strengthening of the judiciary and a rejiging of the Nigerian public service are necessary actions to address the endemic corruption in the society. Other ways to address corruption and reduce its influence on the Nigerian society were also discussed.
Present at the briefing were the Director General, Major General GA Wahab (Rtd), Director of Research, Prof CBN Ogbogbo and other management staff, Senior Research Fellows and Research Fellows, Consultants, senior officers, and other staff of the Centre.
