The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt Gen Tukur Buratai has charged commanders at all levels to be highly creative, innovative, and resourceful particularly in the face of scarce human and material resources in an environment of competitive demands.
General Buratai gave the charge recently during a workshop for GOC’s, Corps Commanders and Commandants of Nigerian Army Schools held at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Abuja.
Represented by the Commander, Training and Doctrine Command, Maj Gen Rasheed Yusuf, the COAS stated that creativity and innovativeness are part of the core values of every military organisation and enjoined Commanders at all levels to demonstrate these qualities towards achieving operational goals.
The Army Chief reiterated that the national security challenges posed by the Boko Haram insurgents informed the President’s directive to the military to end the Boko Haram Menace. He noted that the theme “Leadership and Resources Management in the Nigerian Army” has been able to improve the current standard of creativity and innovativeness in the NA command and leadership structure.
He however observed that despite the successes recorded in the war against insurgency, there is a gap in the level of creativity, innovation and resourcefulness among commanders.
In his words, “We are operating in a time of national economic recession whereby there is paucity of fund due to dwindling budgetary allocation. Thus, the imperative of reorienting and sensitising commanders and leaders on the need to be creative, innovative and resourceful in the discharge of their command responsibilities”.
Earlier, the Director General, Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Maj Gen Johnny Hamakim stated that the Workshop was pertinent due to the realities of the economic down-turn with the attendant implication on shrinking of resources allocated to the military and other stakeholders in the security architecture.
He stated that the Nigerian Army Resource Centre has been up and doing at proffering solutions to contemporary security challenges confronting the NA in particular and the Nigerian state in general for improved decision and policy making that would yield positive result at all levels.
