Nigerian Army Resource Centre (NARC) Weekly Subject Experts’ Presentation was held at Hall C, TY Buratai Block, Abuja. There was one presentation made by the Subject Experts on Eastern Europe.
The only presentation for the day was made by Brig Gen Ak Egwuagu (Rtd) subject experts on Eastern Europe, he focused on Threat of a Third World War: Real Or Imaginary?. During his annual state of the nation address on 29 Feb 24, President Putin had accused the West of trying to drag Russia into an arms race. He stated that Russia needed to strengthen her western border as Sweden and Finland were joining NATO, remarking that the West had provoked the conflict in Ukraine and continued to lie that Russia was intending to attack Europe.
Putin had issued explicit nuclear threat and saying, “The consequences for possible interventionists will be tragic”, in reaction to French President Macron’s comments that sending NATO ground troops to Ukraine “could not be excluded”.
In his analysis and lessons for Nigeria, Brig Gen Ak Egwuagu (Rtd) noted that, the Russia/Ukraine war has caused the price of wheat to skyrocket and according to Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (2022), Nigeria consumes wheat as the third-most other grain and is a significant importer of wheat products. Nigeria, not being at war but depending on food supply from war torn Russia and Ukraine calls for concern and requires a thorough re-planning of our national food security against serious food crisis should supplies from the two warring countries be stopped “the FGN as a matter of urgency, needs to immediately leverage on massive mechanised farming techniques and local food production nationwide towards ensuring food security”.
